National Greenhouse Gas Report 2022
According to the report, emissions peaked in 2009 and had dropped by 11% by 2019. Then in 2020, because of the Covid lockdowns, emissions dropped again, by nearly 6%.
The energy sector is the biggest contributor of greenhouse gases and Eskom is responsible for 86% of the energy industry’s emissions. In fact, Eskom is responsible for 43% of the country’s total emissions.
Ironically, Eskom’s emissions have been decreasing thanks to its problems supplying electricity. The utility’s energy availability factor has been steadily dropping, down from 88% in 2006 to 67% in 2020, says the report.
